About the program
The HELP Debt Reduction Program for Rural Health Practitioners (the program) reduces up to 100% of HELP debt for eligible medical practitioners and nurse practitioners.
The program started on 1 January 2022. It is administered by the Department of Education. The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing provides policy advice and support.
Under the Higher Education Support Act 2003, the program is subject to periodic independent review. The first review was undertaken in 2025, with the next review scheduled for 2028. Further information regarding the 2025 review, including a copy of the Final Report can be found at Independent Review of the HELP Debt Reduction Program.
Benefits of working in rural and remote Australia
Working in rural and remote Australia gives doctors and nurse practitioners the opportunity to support communities with limited healthcare access. You can develop new skills, take on varied clinical work, and build strong connections with patients and local communities. Many practitioners find this type of work personally and professionally rewarding. This experience can broaden your career while helping improve health outcomes in rural and remote Australia.
If you reside and work in an eligible rural or remote location for the required period, you may be eligible for a reduction on your outstanding HELP debt.
Eligibility
The program is available to doctors and nurse practitioners residing and providing general practice services in eligible rural, remote and very remote areas of Australia.
Your debt reduction will be based on meeting the program's eligibility requirements and obligations.
